01Introduction
talk is an iOS application that helps users practice social conversations and access wellness content. We respect your privacy and have built talk to minimize data collection wherever possible.
This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using talk, you agree to the practices described here.
Data controller: The developer of talk operates as the data controller for purposes of GDPR. Contact details are provided in section 11.
02Data we collect
Data you provide directly
- Conversation inputs. Text you enter to generate conversation suggestions or written content. This is processed to produce a response.
- Mood logs. Optional mood entries you record in the wellness section.
- Settings & preferences. Theme, language, notification times, privacy toggles.
Data collected automatically
- Word usage counter. A simple count of words generated, used solely to enforce subscription limits. No content is stored alongside this count.
- Trial start date. The date you first launched the app, used to determine trial eligibility.
- Subscription status. Provided by Apple; we do not see your payment information.
Data we do NOT collect
- We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or any other personally identifiable information from within the app.
- We do not use third-party analytics or advertising trackers.
- We do not access your contacts, photos, location, microphone, or camera.
- We do not collect device identifiers for tracking purposes.
03How we use your data
We use the limited data we collect for the following purposes:
- To provide the service. Conversation inputs are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate responses, which are returned to your device.
- To enforce subscription limits. The word counter ensures fair use of paid plans.
- To maintain your preferences. Settings stay synchronized with your choices.
- To enable optional features. If you turn on iCloud Backup, your conversation history is synced to your personal iCloud account.
We do not use your data for advertising, profiling for advertising purposes, or for any purpose unrelated to operating the app.
04Sharing & third parties
Anthropic (Claude AI)
Conversation prompts you submit are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate responses. Anthropic processes this data under their own privacy policy, available at anthropic.com/privacy. Anthropic does not use API content to train models by default.
Apple
Apple manages your subscription, payment processing, and (if enabled) iCloud sync. We never see your payment details. Apple's privacy practices apply, available at apple.com/privacy.
No other third parties
We do not share, sell, rent, or trade your data with any other third party. We do not use marketing or analytics services within the app.
05Data storage & security
- Local storage. Most of your data — conversation history, mood log, saved stories, settings — is stored only on your device.
- iCloud (optional). If you enable iCloud Backup, your conversation history syncs to your personal iCloud account using Apple's encrypted infrastructure. We never see this data.
- In transit. All communications with the Claude API use HTTPS encryption.
- Clear on Exit. If enabled, all conversation history, saved stories, mood log, AI cache, and personalization data are deleted from your device when you fully close the app.
06Your rights
For users in the European Union (GDPR)
You have the right to access, correct, delete, or port your personal data. You may withdraw consent at any time by disabling features in Settings. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
For users in California (CCPA / CPRA)
You have the right to know what data we collect, to delete it, to correct inaccuracies, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information for advertising purposes.
How to exercise your rights
- Access & review. All your data is visible inside the app — history, saved stories, settings.
- Delete. Turn on "Clear on Exit" in Settings to wipe all data when the app closes. Or delete the app from your device, which removes all local data.
- Stop iCloud sync. Disable "iCloud Backup" in Settings — you'll be asked whether to also delete iCloud copies.
- Disable AI personalization. Turn off "AI Uses History" in Settings.
- Other requests. Email us at the address in section 11 for any other GDPR / CCPA request.
07Children's privacy
talk is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU/UK, where required by law). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can delete it.
08International data transfers
When you use talk, your conversation prompts are sent to servers operated by Anthropic, which may be located in the United States or other countries. By using the app, you consent to this transfer. Anthropic and Apple maintain appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) for international data transfers under GDPR.
09Data retention
- On-device data: Retained until you delete it, the app is uninstalled, or "Clear on Exit" wipes it.
- iCloud sync data (if enabled): Retained in your iCloud account per Apple's policies. You control deletion.
- Subscription & trial data: Retained while you use the app, to enforce subscription limits and prevent trial abuse.
- Anthropic API logs: See Anthropic's own retention policy.
10Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be communicated through the app or App Store update notes. Continued use of talk after a change constitutes acceptance.
